Sheffield Hallam University Employability Academy

A blog by Claudia Eivors (trainee solicitor)…

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to return to Sheffield Hallam University to speak at the Employability Academy, delivering a session titled “A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor.” It was a particularly meaningful experience, as Hallam played a pivotal role in shaping my own legal career.

During the second year of my law degree at Sheffield Hallam, I completed the Employability Academy programme run by Senior Lecturer Mark Johnson. The intensive two-day course was packed with practical guidance, including application advice, mock interviews and panel discussions. It was an invaluable experience that not only strengthened my employability skills but also motivated me to fully commit to pursuing a career in law.

Fast forward two years, and I found myself standing in front of current students, many of whom were in the exact position I had once been. During the session, I spoke about my journey from law student to trainee solicitor, sharing the steps I took during my degree to secure a training contract. I also provided insight into what a typical “day in the life” looks like for a trainee solicitor at MD Law.

I am currently in my first seat in insolvency, which has been a significant but rewarding transition from academic study to practice. The role has introduced a new level of technical legal work and practical problem-solving, highlighting just how much learning takes place once you step into the profession.

The session concluded with a Q&A, where students asked thoughtful and engaging questions about training contracts, career pathways and life as a trainee. I hope the discussion was both informative and reassuring for those considering their next steps.

For me personally, it was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on my legal journey so far and to appreciate how far I have come in a relatively short space of time. Returning to Hallam in this capacity truly felt like a full circle moment, and one I am incredibly grateful for.
