MD Law helps two South Yorkshire surveyors’ firms join forces

Corporate legal advice from MD Law has helped two established South Yorkshire-based firms join forces.

Sheffield-based independent Chartered Surveyors and property experts SMC Brownill Vickers, set up in 1884, has acquired Barnsley-based Smiths Chartered Surveyors, founded in 1898.

James Burdekin, MD Law’s Head of Corporate and Commercial and solicitor Luke Turner acted for SMC on the acquisition.

James said: “We provided legal advice on the acquisition of Smiths building on a working partnership over the last few years. The acquisition further consolidates SMC’s position as the leading, independently owned, firm of chartered surveyors within the South Yorkshire region, and marks another step to providing a wholly comprehensive service for all property matters.”

The firm will continue to trade as Smiths in Barnsley, with the existing Barnsley office of SMC Brownill Vickers relocating into Smiths established premises on Regent Street. Andrew Corbett will continue to head up the Barnsley office and Robin Curtis will continue as managing director.

Andrew Corbett said “This merger is an exciting opportunity to bring together two respected firms of chartered surveyors with a shared commitment to quality and client service. By combining our expertise and teams we are creating a business well positioned for long term growth whilst maintaining the personal service and professional standards our clients expect from us.”

Robin Curtis said: “The move marks a significant step in our strategy to deepen our presence in Barnsley following the previous acquisition of Stanhope Property Consultants, but it also strengthens our position regionally.

“Whilst it reinforces our commitment to the local area it doesn’t restrict our national capability for serving clients around the country who benefit from our membership of the Commercial Property Network.

“Andrew and his team are vastly experienced and highly respected. We are dedicated to building on this reputation and can’t wait for our teams to start working alongside each other leveraging on each team’s skills.

“Both firms pride themselves on providing exemplary customer services and by combining the knowledge, and increasing our market share, we are looking forward to creating broader and more effective service offerings for clients of both organisations.”

Robin added: “We have worked closely with MD Law since their creation, being one of the firm’s first clients. Having acted on our behalf in our previous acquisition in 2021, we had no hesitation in instructing James and the team to deal with our purchase of Smiths. James is highly experienced and extremely diligent, which meant we felt comfortable throughout the transaction.”
